Squalene is a polyunsaturated hydrocarbon which is found in certain fish oils like shark liver oils in high amounts and very low amounts in some vegetable oils. Recent studies reveal certain bioactivities of squalene as anticancer, antioxidant, drug carrier, detoxifier, skin hydrating and emollient activities. The hydrogenated squalene (called Squalane) is widely used in the cosmetic industry as an emollient.
